Three Strategic Challenges in China Acquisitions
Acquisitions can give a company a quick head start in China, but a number of challenges need to be understood and addressed if that approach is to be successfully implemented. Foremost are issues of identifying appropriate acquisition candidates, business valuation, and intellectual property protection. Each of these three challenges has explicit roots in China’s business environment, reflecting its immaturity and its history. As a result, firms contemplating China acquisitions must anticipate that these challenges will emerge. This paper describes concepts and ideas that have helped leading firms address these key challenges and ensure that China acquisitions contribute to their growth strategy.
